Watch the Face It online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from 50 R&B Bass Grooves You MUST Know

12/8 is a popular groove that can be notated different ways. Sometimes you will see it written as 4/4 time, sometimes even as 6/8, but even if notated differently it will commonly be identified as having a 12/8 feel. This format has been used for many hits by artists like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston to earlier hits by Sam Cooke and Louis Armstrong. This groove emulates some of the songs written by producer Babyface who has had a number of hits with this feel. I have found the rhythms to sometimes be challenging to sight read but it helps if you have mastered the feel. There will be a 6 8th note click count in, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Overall we must be patient in the sections where there are long notes like our 1st F in bar 1. It helps me to look at the patterns in 4 groups of 3 when subdividing the rhythms. I count the 16th notes as on the & of the beat but use whatever little tricks you can find that work for you. Most importantly, capture the feel.
