Watch the Family Time online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from 50 R&B Bass Grooves You MUST Know
Producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers had so many hits both as part of the group Chic and for other artists but always put their stamp on the songs. We attempt to emulate Bernard's bass style in this next groove. The groove is played fingerstyle exclusively making use of Bernard's disco octaves sound. Bar 1 introduces the motif that will be used throughout the 4 bar groove, the key is the muted 16th note right before beat 3 which sets up the octave lick. We will play the downbeat on beat 1 only in the 1st bar, every other bar is anticipated on the & of 4 of the bar before. We get away from the motif in bar 4 with a riff that basically walks up from D to the G chord using D, E, and F#, then continues walking up chromatically from G to G# to the start of a new phrase with A. Remember to play the muted ghost note that sets up the 2nd G note in that bar.
