Watch the J.B. Number One online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from 50 R&B Bass Grooves You MUST Know
Here is a classic James Brown style lick in Ab. We are creating a hypnotic type groove over Ab7. It is not uncommon for these grooves to stay on one chord for 32 bars or longer, so you want to leave space to build the groove as the song develops but also have the discipline to sit in this same pocket for an extended period. We will use only the root Ab, the flat 7, Gb, and the octave Ab for this pattern but it incorporates a subtle swing that gives it a nice bounce. It is unusual that there is no snare on beat 3 and bass and drums both playing on the downbeat of beat 2, adds a different type of funkiness.
