Watch the Rescue Please online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from 50 R&B Bass Grooves You MUST Know
What we have here is a 1 to 4 chord movement in the Motown vein based on the hit song "Rescue Me" using that 6th as a pivot in the 1st bar along with a simple 1, 2, 3, 5 triad-based pattern in bar 2. Notice how much more melodic using mostly just the triad notes is versus playing a root dominated line, although there is nothing wrong with using all roots. Paul McCartney mastered this approach on many of the Beatles hits. This pattern might typically be doubled by horns or another instrument. I like to play this style higher on the fretboard where it sounds warmer in some cases.
