Watch the Big Bear online guitar lesson by Andrew Ford from 50 R&B Bass Grooves You MUST Know
Here is a groove based on some of Barry White's hits where bass and drums had the task of providing a solid foundation for Barry's sensual vocals and the orchestral background that often accompanied his tracks. The 16th note hihat patterns provided the drive even at slower tempos and the bass complemented the drums just right with sparse repetitive patterns supplying just the right amount of movement. On this groove I use a root down to the 5th movement with a pivoting motion. At the end of the 4 bar phrase is a short fill to set up the next phrase. The fill stays in context to not disturb the lush groove that has been established. The groove is in F minor and the turnaround fill implies a C chord which is the 5 and always moves nicely back to the 1. I outline that C using the notes G which is the 5 of C and the root C.
