Watch the Fly online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from 50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know
A popular trend among bass players and guitarists is to use both hands to get more than one rhythm going at the same time. The idea is to set up an ostinato (or two) with one or more hands or fingers, and then improvise over this set pattern. In this case (Groove # 44) we play a simple syncopated pattern traditionally. We then simulate a hi-hat pattern using the thump in the slap bass style, and then hit the neck with the left hand on 2 and 4 to act as the snare drum. Voila! Bass and drum part at the same time. This will also take some time to build up the independence between your hands and fingers but once you get it, it should open the doors to different ways that you can experiment and come up with your own grooves using these methods.
