Watch the Sowetto online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from 50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know

I first heard South African pop when my father returned from a teaching gig in Grahamstown, S.A. and handed me an LP called "The Indestructible Beat of Soweto". Years later, Paul Simon would receive praise and criticism for exposing (or using for his own purposes) this joyous music to the world in his album "Graceland" and the wonderful bassist Bakithi Kumalo. The melodic roots of the bass lines in this music come from the acapella singing groups from the region. Notice how on beat three in bar one, you can either play it on the beat, or slide up to and slightly anticipate the beat. African music is not based on rigid subdivision of 16th, 32nd and 64th notes, but has an ebb and flow that is hard to describe.
