James Jameson was of course, one of the all time great bass players who's played on more Motown and soul hits than you can name. Along the way he invented or championed so many styles of bass playing that we take for granted today, one of which was his unique use of muting techniques and ghost notes. Ghost notes are often 16th notes that are not fully articulated, and exist as percussive sounds in the groove. This example may be tricky at first, but stick with it and you will have a valuable tool in your bass grooving bag of tricks to enhance the feel of this kind of groove.
