Watch the Approach! online guitar lesson by Stu Hamm from 50 Pro Bass Grooves You MUST Know
In the third of our jazz grooves we are going to up the ante by adding chromatic approach notes to our walking bass line. Here we play a note 1/2 step above or below our target note of the root of the next chord on the downbeat. This will give your line a very different sound, and therefore give the whole song a different vibe. There is also a signature bass player triplet fill on the D7th chord. While this type of fill is common in swing, please remember not to play it too often and remember that your main job is to lay down the quarter note with integrity and authority.
