Watch the Milk Hunt online guitar lesson by Freekbass from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know
This lick is from a song that we do live.
Like the last lick, I am using my thumb almost like a pick. I am starting off on the 10th fret (C) on my D string. James Brown has always been a big influence on me and my playing, and while I started off learning all of the basslines, I then moved to learning the rhythm guitar parts by some of the JB masters such as Catfish Collins, who I had the honor to know and play with.
I started off learning the parts on the guitar, and thought, wow, these would sound pretty sweet on bass too, but how do I create that same feel? So going to my right-hand thumb, I used it in the same manner a rhythm guitarist would use their pick. Using both down and upstrokes, and lots of ghost notes too, always keeping my thumb moving in a constant motion up and down like this.
