Watch the G Bow-Bow online guitar lesson by Freekbass from 50 Freekbass Licks You MUST Know

When I was a little kid, I once saw a classical music concert where the double-bassist came out for a solo. He played a run where he was bouncing his bow over the strings, and it was a lick that always stuck with me.

When I started getting my chops together on electric bass, I wanted to figure out a way to imitate that sound. What I am doing is playing a G harmonic minor scale starting on the fifth fret of my D string. I am hammering to each note of the run from the open D string thumping it with my right hand. Then I am plucking the open G string. It creates a triplet feel, and the same sound that I heard the double-bassist do when I was a kid. Also, I'm using my middle finger for each note on the neck, almost violin-like.
