Once you've learned all of the chord shapes, you really can start experimenting with the knowledge. When chopping, you can move back and forth up the neck between shapes. It's good to practice moving the shapes with a capo on as well. I used to find that I often used the markings on the neck to find the chords and using a capo can screw that up some when you're playing on the fly.
