Watch the Common Chords & The Capo online guitar lesson by Roberto Dalla Vecchia from Solo Flatpicking Handbook
In flatpicking guitar, we prefer to use open position chords. The main reason for doing this is for the sound and tone of the open strings. So we include them as often as possible both in our solos and in our chords.
When I arrange a song incorporating chords, I try to pay a lot of attention to the bass line. I like it to be somehow interesting, and most of the time I look for a way to make the bass line either ascending or descending. This way the bass line makes the chord progression tighter and meaningful.
