Watch the Modifying Patterns online guitar lesson by Massimo Varini from Pop Guitar Survival Guide
One of the fundamental aspects of pop music is its simplicity. And often each part is, or may seem, simple to perform. So the basic rhythm pattern may be a simple pattern such as those seen until now. But if you play this pattern as a measure throughout, the song could be extremely boring and the song is bad. So let's start from our basic pattern and let's use it only for a measure, then we modify by adding a second measure picking up what gives a sense of syncope, then back to the basic pattern for the third bar and add different rhythmic movements to measure 4. In this way the pattern has become a 4 measures length - maybe no one will notice that we are changing it, but no one will get bored!
