Watch the Basso Ostinato online guitar lesson by Peppino D'Agostino from Acoustic Poetica: Fingerstyle Etudes
In this exercise, we'll be learning how to play a constant bass with the thumb, switching from the 6th to the 5th string. Learn this etude by first playing the bass notes and then add the additional notes on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings. Use a metronome at low speed (50 BPM) to practice playing the bass. The 6th and 5th strings are played with the thumb, while the 1st string is played with the ring finger. The 2nd string is played with the middle finger, and the 1st string is played with the index finger. Please note that on the 1st beat of measure 9, the E note played on the 2nd fret of the 4th string is played with the index finger in conjunction with the thumb playing the 3rd fret of the 5th string. It's the same fingering with the D# played on the 1st fret of the 4th string in conjunction with the thumb playing the 2nd fret of the 5th string (1st beat of measure 10).
