Watch the C# Phrygian Progression online guitar lesson by Tierra Negra from Magic Gypsy Chords & Rhythms
We call this progression “The Mystical”.
Place the capo at the 1st fret.
For me, this is the purest and most authentic flamenco chord progression of all! You can’t get any deeper into the soul of the flamenco than with this wonderful, moody guitar progression. The secret is the tuning. Tune the low E-string to D and the G-string to F#! If you ever heard Paco de Lucia´s Rondena “Mi Nino Curro” or “Cuva Del Gato,” you now know the secret of how the great master of the flamenco guitar created this mood. For me, it’s the high point of the magic flamenco chord progressions. Close your eyes and enjoy!
The progression here is a bit different from the other cadences. You play four chords, but you don´t start with a minor chord as usual. The progression is 3 - (2 – 2) – 1, chord number 3 is an inversion of chord number 2.
Place the capo at the 1st fret and go to the 3rd position. If you were playing without the capo, we would be in the key of C#-Phrygian, but actually the cadence sounds like in the key of D-Phrygian because we have the capo at the 1st fret. I play this rhythm only with my forefinger and thumb. Start rehearsing the rhythm pattern slowly and don´t forget, it´s in a 6/8 (or 12/8) bar!
