Watch the Jack Magic: 9 online guitar lesson by Tommy Emmanuel from Little by Little
I wrote this song a few years ago, and it's really inspired by a wonderful guy that I met out at a health place named Jack Dills. He was a great guitar player and a really good singer, but the thing about Jack was that he was so funny and so clever with close up magic. He did things like pulling a bent spoon out of his pocket and making things disappear. I just thought he was such a character and I thought of the title Jack Magic instead of Black Magic. Jack Magic is his own style of magic.
When I was writing the piece I was thinking about him, I was thinking about how funny it is. I was trying to get a little bit of mystery into the chords of the song and create a kind of tongue in cheek phrases and chords. It's just constantly winding around and tickling our ears. The introduction to the song, I tried to make it sound like it was from the sixties. It's a little bit like Ray Charles' Tell Me What I Say.
There are a lot of little things like that I use in my songs and in my writing to create a feeling about the song and almost give the listener a bit of a hint as to what's coming.
