Watch the Countrywide: 9 online guitar lesson by Tommy Emmanuel from Little by Little
Countrywide is a song of mine from a long time ago, back in the seventies. I wrote this tune in a bit of a hurry because a television network in Australia needed a theme for a TV show called Countrywide. They rang me about coming and writing it for them. So I had a look at some of the footage from this show, and I was very inspired, very moved by it.
I had my little Martin guitar with me at the time, and I asked them to leave me alone for about ten minutes, and I'll see what I can come up with. About 5 minutes after they all left the room, and I wrote this song.

They came back ten minutes later and I played it for them. Luckily, they said that it was perfect and wanted to record it right then and there. I literally played into the microphone while the guy had the tape player rolling on his hip.
One of the things that I really love about this song is that no matter where I am in the world, if there's an Australian there, they'll usually always sing out for Countrywide.
I remember the first time I taught a Master Class at Berklee College of Music up in Boston. The place was full of young people, and I came out to play and asked if anybody had any questions. The first to ask was a girl down in the front row and she asked if I could play Countrywide! That made my day.
It has also been said that this song is one of the easiest songs I've written, for other guitar players to play. So that's a good thing! The song is in A minor. I'll play it at the tempo I wrote it and then we'll slow it down. Enjoy!
