Watch the Harp Guitar online guitar lesson by Stephen Bennett from Fingerstyle Finesse
The first tune is called Tenochtitlan, which was the name of the great Aztec city destroyed by the conquistadores in the early 16th century. It's amazing to read their descriptions of the beauty and grandeur of this place, just before they decided to destroy it...
I'm playing my great grandfather's 1909 Dyer Brothers harp guitar. The performance took place at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in Nashville, Tennessee a couple of years ago.
The second tune is Perestroika. It's one of my first harp guitar compositions. It came about in the late 1980s, right about the time I first heard Michael Hedges. I was sitting around one day trying to figure out what he was doing to make the music that he did and Perestroika just kind of showed up. The word means "restructuring" and was associated with Gorbachev and the end of the Soviet Union.
