Watch the Working with a I bVII IV online guitar lesson by Vicki Genfan from Acoustic Rhythm Survival Guide

Guitar based rock bands from 1967 to 1980 (Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd, etc.) began to use this progression and other variations as a contrast to the earlier days of rock and blues which relied so heavily on only the I, IV and V chords. "Borrowing" chords from other keys, these bands tended to use the bIII, bVII and/or bVI – opening up many new progression possibilities.

In addition to the examples on the video, here are a few more songs using this progression: Last Time by the Rolling Stones, Hush by Deep Purple, Magic Bus by the Who, Good Times Bad Times by led Zeppelin, Living in the Past by Jethro Tull, Whip It by Devo and Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills and Nash.
