Vertical Soloing II
We continue our study of "vertical
soloing" in this second set of lessons. Learning how to "see" all of the
chord tones in a single "vertical" position is essential for learning how to
play and improvise over chord changes. Of equal benefit, you are forced to
break away from your comfort zone, visual routines and old bag of licks. In
short, vertical soloing is your key to busting out of the rut and
accelerating your knowledge of the fretboard.
Our first progression is a I IV progression in the key of A. You will learn
all five forms of the caged system for this vamp. Next will be the arpeggios
for each chord, then the major pentatonic scales and finally the entire
major scale. Common tones are examined as well as the notes that change in a
I IV progression when using pentatonics. Various arpeggios are also
presented as a means to isolate subgroups of the entire mode.
