Foxes Vs Hearts, A Romance Of The Great Fur Boom
. Author: Bob MacKenzie
. Category: Fiction, Educational, Romance, Portfolio/Catalog
. Description: "Foxes vs Hearts" was written by my great grandfather, the Reverend E. P. Calder, a Baptist Minister serving parishes in the Canadian maritime provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. This novel (or perhaps novella, since it comprises only about one hundred single-spaced typed pages) was written in the years following World War One and, although my great grandfather doesn't give the exact years or province, is clearly set in Prince Edward Island in the years 1913 and 1914.
It may be that the hero, an itinerant Baptist preacher named Churchill, resembles in some ways the author. My research to date has revealed some possible resemblances of other characters to real historical persons in P.E.I. industry, and politics. Because of this and because of where and when the story is set, I believe it may be of interest to scholars researching the early 20th century history of Prince Edward Island, especially as it has to do with either the Baptist Church or the fox farming industry.
It should be noted that, while I did proof-read this manuscript for obvious typographical errors (it was written by hand, typed by my great aunt, Reverend Calder's daughter, then retyped into the computer), I have not edited. At times, the punctuation tends to be unconventional and often much more sparse than one would expect in a manuscript from this time. This may be due to the conventions of the time or to the peculiarities of my great grandfather's writing style. Whatever the case, I have made the decision to let the manuscript stand as written.
There are also infrequent references which reflect certain attitudes of the time which may seem bigotted seen through modern eyes but which were current enough in that society at that time that their inclusion was most likely quite unconscious on the part of the author. These include a passing reference to the "Neegor," deprecating comments regarding the Irish, and one reference to the "Hebrew junkman." All these references reflect the attitudes of the time and are, in that context, quite innocuous. Again, in the interest of retaining the author's intent, I have made the decision to neither remove nor alter these references.
To defray costs, I am charging a small fee for access to this document. Because I am doing research into the background of this story, I will appreciate any information others may be able to provide me regarding the Reverend E. P. Calder and his life, the fox farming industry in Prince Edward Island and the personalities involved, political issues and activities in Prince Edward Island during the period around the time of World War One, and life in the maritimes at that time.
