Guest Guru: Jim Campilongo
. Author: Jude Gold, performed by Brad Carlton
. Publisher: Guitar Player Magazine
. Category: Blues, Theory/Techniques
. Description: Nobody weaves together
jazz, blues,
and country with the
silky finesse of Jim
Campilongo. The sharp-toothed
melodies that issue from his ’59
Fender Telecaster seem as natural
as a coyote’s howl. Similarly, bebopinflected
pedal-steel bends emanate
from his weathered Deluxe
Reverb like ghostly wails from a
haunted castle. There are spirits in
these licks.
Though Campilongo’s playing
is harmonically rich, he doesn’t typically
feature unnecessary notes or
overly complex chords. “I tell my
students to throw away those chord
dictionaries that are filled with thousands of fingerings,” says
Campilongo. “It’s hard enough to
know just three shapes really well.
But three fingerings can go a long
way.” To illustrate his elegant approach to comping, Jim serves up 4 ear-opening examples.
