Default Songs with the "Ultimate Tone"

Some recordings just capture the perfect guitar tone for the piece being played. I was just listening to Chris Isaak's "Heart Shape World" album and the song "Wicked Game" came on and to me that is the Ultimate in Tone the guitar featured in the song. It is such a haunting song and the reverb and tone of the guitar work is so cool and creepy.....perfection.

So what are some other ultimate tone cuts?

I know I have posted this before but it is so good!

"I once played notes so fast that light emanated from the strings whereupon, I saw God.... who then told me to relax and start playing music."

"I don't want to think about how I am doing it because that just makes it harder." Steve Howe

"You know, once you've had that guitar up so loud on the stage, where you can lean back and volume will stop you from falling backward, that's a hard drug to kick." David Gilmour

George Harrison's tone in 'You Never Give me Your Money' is just superb.
The acoustic /electric guitar solo in The Year of the Cat.(that mix was a Alan Parsons' idea).
Robert Fripp's tone in King Crimson's Night Watch.
David Gilmour: Shine on Your Crazy Diamond .(All the blues in that tone).
Bryan Ferry's 'Slave to Love' had no other than Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour and of course they both sounded like Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera.
Johnny Marr's tone in The Smith's 'William it was really Nothing'.
Television's Marquee Moon: Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd in a guitar duel with beautiful sounds.

    (to be continued).

If you go to the Telecaster Forum (TDPRI.com) James Wilsey is a member there and contributes often. I have is solo album called El Dorado which is AMAZING! All instrumental useig a strat. His nickname is WickedGTR I believe. Great guy. Here is a thread that someone started asking him questions...

As for the topic...great question. I'll have to say SRV's Lenny and Riviera Paradise are on my all time favorite lists as it pertains to tone. The pure Fender clean tone on both!

The missing link between Punk and Virtuosity? In this song from Public Image LTD ( the band from ex Sex Pistols Johny Lydon) there's a guest appearence from no other than Steve Vai (2.20)..

Believe it or not, I really like Buckethead's tone on the song Too Many Humans. Its a slow blues and I just love the way it sounds.

I've posted this song in other threads. This song doesn't sound like the usual strangeness from Buckethead. Even people who don't like Buckethead may end up liking this one.

Welcome to the Cruel World by Ben Harper.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6jwhOOajJ0

    Nice earthy acoustic tone.

I first saw Ben Harper at an outdoor festival in Seattle. I had never heard of him before and he blew my mind. Then a few months later I went on a 3 day, 45 mile solo hike half way around Mt Rainier. I bought Ben Harper's first CD (which this song is from) the day before the hike and I didn't listen until I was on the trail. It was a wonderful experience to be hiking in a beautiful area and listening to that CD for the first time. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

You guys are selecting some cool tunes...all of them!

I have always thought Gary Moore has the best Les Paul tone so I am seconding Jimmy. This is probably my favorite tone song combo they just go together

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ11KYu8YwU

    My favorite Gilmour solo: Time
The tone just rides over the top of the track with such a haunting brilliance
    The solo starts at 3:48

OK I have to confess: there are two guitar solos that made me cry in their days:
Brian May's guitar solo in A Kind of Magic - the one that starts in 4.00 (there a gems in all Brian´s career, but this one always has been a personal favorite).now May's beautiful tone shines in all the song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb4-W...eature=related

the other is the tasty guitar solo at the end of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights (the girl was nuts those days but his song is a classic -by the way she was discovered by David Gilmour).

I was thinking about Jethro Tull's Martin Barre and his quintessential tone and what would be a representative song that demonstrates his sound, finally I reminded the gorgeous song 'Home' . The second is also quite cool (Orion).

Heard Gimme All your Lovin' on the radio the other day and reminded me of this performance on "The Tube" a British show that ran in the early 80's. I had this on Betamax tape for years and it got lost in the mists but found it on the Toob wuuuunderful. Mr Gibbon's tone hear is an Ultimate Tone candidate for sure er yawl

Wow-you guys are all over this one... at least as far as my taste is concerned.

    Robin Trower-Bridge of Sighs
Gary Moore-almost any on Still Got the Blues
    Henry Garza-How Far is Heaven
    Year of the Cat
    All outstanding picks.

OK, my mind is finally clearing a bit, I recall a few of my all time favs (in additon to the above)

    David Gilmore-Comfortably Numb
Dickie Betts-Blue Sky & In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Eric Clapton-White Room & While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Mark Knopfler-You and Your Friend, The Planet of New Orleans
    Robben Ford-Talk to Your Daughter

    Perhaps to be continued.

There's some amazing tone in this song. Its nasty on the verge of being sick - and it sounds so wonderful. Listen to the lead and the rhythm tones.

Default Santana's Samba Pa Ti tone

I love Carlos Santana's tone on the original version of Samba Pa Ti. Because his amp (probably a beefed up Fender Twin) did not have the super-saturated overdrive of his Mesa Boogie, he's able to get a great dynamic range by working the volume knob on his guitar.

Also, he sets his wah-wah pedal in a certain position, and leaves it there. This adds a nice edge.
