Thanks for making me feel welcome.. Well I am still kind of a jazz wannabee... so the Klon is kinda part of my blues/rock past even though I still use it whenever I am plugged in..
I think it was about $250 when I got mine.
It doesn't seem indispensible to me like some guys feel.. I like my $30 Boss SD-1 as much or even more on some days..Seems more "transparent" if you can say that about an OD pedal.. I used to be a real gear hound and that was when I got the Klon. I also had played in a blues rock funk cover band so it was good there too. I got my Princeton Reverb about 15 yrs ago for $375(sounds like a great deal nowadays) and am really happy with it..and I upgraded it with a WeberVST speaker I won when the net was still new and you could actually win something!..seems like the best of Fender in a compact package..

My Riviera is actually my first electric.. I got it in 1970 or so and played in my first gigging blues band. The Tom Anderson Droptop I got when i was having some trouble with left hand pain and wanted an axe with a Floyd and 9s.. Still play it everyday even though I am learning jazz!
Really a superb guitar(fantastic attn to details and a beauty to look at) and I really like their pickups.
I probably play my first axe as much as any of them and it is a $60(1965 price) Goya nylon string I got from my first teacher when I was about 13.. action is awful but it still sounds better than most nylons I have played up to about $1000 these days.

I bought a nylon string guitar from my first guitar teacher Jose'. Eventually I gave to my brother and he gave it to his daughters so it's been around. It actually played pretty nice, even though I snapped the headstock in college in a tragic dorm room incident involving several co-eds and a fifth of Wild Turkey

1. Total I've been playing about six years with a long break in between to be a percussionist and get run over by kharma.

2. Country Blues, Contemporary and Heritage Blues, Acid Rock, Jazz.

3. Rig is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom in black w/ gold hardware through a Fender 15G for practice and a Hot Rod Deluxe for gigging. I don't do a lot of electonics, trying to get the playing to stand on its own.

4. I'm real new to the site and almost overwhelmed by the amount and quality of material and instructors. Right now I'm working on the West Coast Blues Course and have been really impressed with how easy your system is making learning the material.

5. Like a number of the others I just got here so I haven't really had a chance to scope things out. I'll definitely keep in touch and let you know if I come up with any ideas.

1. How many years have you been playing? For about 38 years on-and-off, so I'm really only an intermediate player. I've taken a few breaks due to frustration/plateauing. I also took a couple long breaks to focus on other instruments (Chapman Stick and sitar).

I did purchase the TF Stick course by Steve Adelson when it was first released last year. In fact, that's how I learned of TF - a mail from Steve announcing the course. It wasn't until later that I really took a look and realized how much great guitar stuff there was.

You are not alone. I have a Chapman stick too..I got it many yrs ago after seeing Steve Adelson perform at Borders in San Francisco. He did a gig with a percussionist and absolutely blew me away. I eventually found a used one locally for a reasonable price..maybe $650..too long ago to remember. I struggled with it for more than a yr(with little progress despite all the online resources) and then left it in the closet.. for many more yrs..After checking out Steve A's lessons I am taking another stab at it... It really is tough though and makes me feel like a "Kindergarten baby" after 40+ yrs on the guitar..Right now I am just trying to play "in time" enough to use it as bass and sparse chords for my bluesy compositions.. probably need to multi-track.. Pretty hard dividing my time between guitar and Stick but working on it.
What are you using The Stick on? and how did you get competent on it?

Yeah, gadlaw, the Stick is pretty neat. I first saw it in adds in Guitar Player back in the late '70s. When I read a review of a jazz band from CA that had two stick players, I hunted down their album and was hooked. I bought mine in '85.

I hate to admit it, but it was tough at first. Think about playing the guitar right handed. My right hand was used to picking/plucking, and my left hand did the fretting. On the stick, both hands fret, with the right playing treble and the left playing bass. So my left hand was well trained, but my right hand felt like it was all thumbs for what seemed like a long, long time. And guitar really didn't prepare me for the whole hand independence thing. I still struggle some times with getting both hands to do completely different things at the same time.

Steve's TF course is a bit like his book. It ranges from basic concepts through advanced. Both the course and the book presented new ideas or different ways of thinking about things I already knew.

I've a Gibson Les Paul Custom in white a la James Dean Bradfield/Justin Hawkins, and a Fender Strat (brown sunburst) 1HB+2SC. No Rig atm, I do my recordings on the computer using amp sim's.

Thus far I'm really impressed. I've just joined so have to check over everything and get to grips with the workings, but I'm liking it!

5- How can we make this forum better for you?

Sorry, fusejaz, I didn't see your post. It must have slipped in between my reading gadlaw's post and posting a response to him. And since I was the last listed post until today, I had not revisited this thread.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I was frustrated at how long it took to make the transition to the Stick. I just kept thinking how easy it should be since I had been fretting a guitar for well over a decade. There really wasn't any place to turn to for lessons or advice. And that was before the internet as we know it allowed hooking up with like-minded individuals to share insight. I had to struggle a long time on my own before I found the two things that made a difference for me.

First, I worked out everything as chord block diagrams. Though a bit painstaking and time consuming, it was well worth it. Seeing the fingering patterns visually worked a lot better for me than either standard notation or tabs.

The other thing had to do with some early bad advice. Or maybe it was just a forest vs trees thing...A year or two before buying, I contacted Emmett Chapman and asked if there were any owners I could meet to see a Stick first hand. He hooked me up with a guy who was hours away but nice enough to let me come by for a demo and to answer questions. His one piece of advice was that as a guitarist, he found the best approach was to learn the treble and bass parts independently, then work on combining them. I don't know how long I tried and failed with that approach. No matter how well I knew the two parts separately, I had a tough time getting everything to work together at the same time. My frustration grew until I had a small flash of insight. It occurred to me that no one approached a counterpoint guitar piece with that way. Nor, come to think of it, had I ever known a piano player to learn a piece that way. Maybe this was just the wrong way to do it. So I started trying to do both hands at the same time. It was really slow at first. My biggest hurdle was mental - I was too stuck on thinking about the instrument as a guitar and a bass with each hand playing that role. When I finally did break that habit and started thinking about playing the whole rather than the parts, it really opened a door for me. Where I had previously tended to play a chord with one hand and an accompanying note with the other, I started to think more chordal with both hands at the same time through the use of poly chords or stacked triads across the sides. That was really the turning point in my playing.

I tend to go through phases where I focus on either the guitar or the Stick, with the other getting little or no attention. While I happen to be in a guitar phase with the Stick collecting dust at the moment, a shift in the planets has been known to make the Stick the instrument of choice overnight. I have actually been thinking about trying to work with both instruments on the next applicable TF course I undertake. I'm just not entirely sure I can commit to that much practice time.

Steve Adelson's course here seems to be very helpful in pointing me in the right direction.. but there are also so many great guitar courses here that even though I have started dabbling with my Stick again I am still gravitating toward the guitar lessons more. I totally agree about the visual aspects of learning.

I find it really challenging to get much accurate use out of my right hand on the treble strings(or bass side)..just not used to that action.. I have read that same advice often about learning one hand at a time and it hasn't been of much help for me either.. but then I also have trouble learning Travis picking...:-( btw did you see this new touch instrument?

Hi everybody!
1. I was playing on and off for several years as a kid but I have only been really dedicated to playing guitar for four years.

2. I love to play the blues. It came naturally to me when I started playing and the I-IV-V progression has such a strong conversational feel to it. I also enjoy playing hard rock.

3. I play a low-end $200 Ibanez guitar through a Vox VT15 or a 15 watt version of their previous model. I also have a 40 watt Marshall amp that is about 20 years old. I own a Digitech Jimi Hendrix Experience wah pedal and a Morley Steve Vai Bad Horsie 2 wah.

4. I just got started with TrueFire, but I like the selection of downloads. I already picked out two that I liked. I'm going to look at the free lessons available soon.

5. The forum is well made with many options for organizing it. So far I have no complaints. I look forward to talking to a lot of great guitarists! Anyone out there from North Bay, CA?

We only argue around here about once a year and even at that it's in the General Forum section and you will know which thread that is and you won't even have to look at it.

There are lively discussions about C7 Chords and passing notes and theory and technique, heck we don't even argue about who likes which music. Welcome aboard and you are most welcomed to any thread you see.

Hmmm. How much space do I have here? Let's see, I have a Yamaha electric from the 80's, and Yamaha acoustic electric, a Yamaha Silent Acoustic Guitar, a Yamaha Drop 6 electric, an Ovation, a Stagg 12-string, and a Parker Nitefly. (And soon I'll be the proud and ecstatic owner of the Vicki Genfan Acoustic guitar from Truefire!!!)

My live rig consists of a Hughes & Kettner Switchblade head and matching 4x12 cab, with a Lyt Pedalboard containing a Boss tuner pedal, a Morley 3-way switcher, a Roland GR-20 Guitar Synth, a Boomerang looper, and my Switchblade controller.

And despite all that, I'm not a very good guitar player,,,,,,. I freely admit to having G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome.)

4- What do you think about TrueFire?

I love Truefire! I've been a fan and customer from nearly the beginning, and have bought many lessons and courses over the years. (Now if I could just find time to go through them more often!)

I've just recently joined the forum, but from what I've experienced already, it's a great forum! Chris Buono already posted and thanked me for my recommendation of his Guitar Cubed course! How cool is that?

I can say that no question goes unanswered here and people are very good at sharing their knowledge and wisdom about music and guitar. You are welcomed to jump into any discussion you see or start your own. It's all good here. Again welcome - oh since you are a microbiologist what's up with the latest scare about the latest 'superbug' coming over from India? I remember listening to NPR a few months ago about the Superbug in hospitals and they mentioned that it lives in the soil naturally. I also have seen something on the Science Channel about a kid who jumped in a pond and got a amoeba in his brain which killed him.
