Tony MacAlpine started out as a classical pianist. Then he turned into a shred guitarist and was one of my first guitar heros. Later he moved to a jazz fusion style.

He is not only an amazing guitarist he is also an amazing musician. I love his melodies and they are they kind that stick in my head all day long.

Here he is in 2008. He is pretty relaxed even though some of his playing is intense. Notice who is playing rhythm guitar.

Here's a song from way back off his first album. I bought this album when it first came out and I have been a fan ever since. I still consider it one of the best shred albums of all time. The album and the song are called Edge of Insanity. This was the beginning of a musical genre we called Neo-Classical Fusion (Neo means "new" and Neo-Classical Fusion means "new style of music that fuses classical with Rock and other styles of music". It was an exciting new style of instrumental music. Then Joe Satriani came along and made it more mainstream. But in my opinion, Tony get's credit for putting the "Classical" in Neo-Classical Fusion.

I've seen Tony give a guitar clinic approximately 20 years ago, and he was a super nice down to earth person. He is a great role model.

AYE! Aye have seen this guy playing with Vai before and did not know who he was. I just thought of him as the guy that can hold his own with Vai. Thanks for the introduction.

Thanks for the history and the discussion. Just goes to show that you should be nice and polite to folks from the first day you start until the end - everyone you meet has the opportunity to remember you and write about it on the Internet in the future. :chatter: AYE

AYE!!!

Tony McAlpine is a monster player. After a really successful solo career, he became the third guitarist in Steve Vai's band, also handling keyboards.

Hi Crazy Mike,
MacAlpine was already nominated in a previous thread and in fact he made the list of 100+ Gifted Guitarists You Should Know. I merged your thread with one started by Beboy to keep the nominations together.
He is an awesome player.

Tony has been a longtime favorite of mine since his 1st Shrapnel release with Billy Sheehan.
As someone mentioned earlier, his melodies have lifted me like too few of his peers back in those early days of neo-classical shred.

Timely nomination, too: Tony has a new release coming out June 21st!!

Years ago a friend of mine who is a great guitarsit played me David Bowie's 'Outside':

http://www.amazon.com/Outside-David-Bowie/dp/B000000W9Z

I loved it. I loved the chaotic soundscapes. A lot of the sound is due all of David's band members but also to Reeves Gabrels who I think is amazing!!
