Buckethead has always been right on the edge of my radar but just spent some time randomly through his vids. I think I'll investigate some more...
"Aye" mofo Caramba
Would like to see more metal guitarists nominated some of these guys are really pushing the boundaries of tone and technique...

AYE!! I love buckethead just the way he is. I wasn't a believer until I saw him and his crazy band (the drummer is nuts!) live in a little dive in Seattle. The costume is part of the package. It's super hard to play like that with the mask on, I tried it last halloween at a gig. But on the other hand it's kind of fun because no one can see who you really are and it's not as intimidating, which is why Buckethead wears the mask, he has/had stage fright and found that it was easier to perform with the mask on, or so he said in an interview.

Buckethead gets my vote.
At the same time, I don't know if he's a good candidate. I mean, he's prolific as hell, a new album every few months, but a lot of it isn't that great. Most people only know him for a few tracks on which he really shreds.
He is a very versatile guitarist, but I just don't know if he's that underrated.
