With today's technology some songs are emailed and then recorded but what did they do back in 1946?
I just read an article in the Feb 09 EQ magazine and it mentioned Hank Williams Sr, who in 1946 recorded at Castle Studios.
Castle studios was state of the art and they recorded thru a single mic (RCA 44 or 77 ribbon mic) directly to a Scully lathe that cut master discs. This gave them the ability to quickly duplicate and distribute the records. Recording straight to disc meant they had to get it right the first time.
Here's the weird part. The scully lathe was too big to keep on site so they kept it at a wharehouse 12 miles away, connected to the studio by a telephone line. They recorded thru a phone line!
